Reunion 2006

These pages hold the planning and related information for the Reunion in 2006, which I will leave here as a record of the event. You will probably be more interested in looking at the pictures of either the Reunion (on 10th June) or the Kensington Walk (on 11th June); you can find these by clicking on the links above, or by clicking on the ‘Reunion 2006’ button on the left.

Plans have been made to hold a reunion and celebration of the life and times and huge successes of the various degree programmes which will close in 2006. These include Biology, Zoology, Botany, Biological Sciences and Microbiology which were taught at QEC.  Other degrees closing at the same time include Environmental Sciences, Environmental Health and Immunology. The reunion will coincide with the annual KCL June reunion, and take place on Saturday June 10th 2006 at Great Hall, Strand, King's College London (click on the link for directions).  It is hoped that the final students will have an opportunity to meet former students of these disciplines from QEC, Chelsea and King's colleges.  This event is being jointly co-ordinated by Dr Jill Sales in the Dept of Life Sciences, and our Chair, Dr Ann Wood.

Webmaster’s Update April 2006 :

Below is the latest update on the event from Ann; in case you are not sure what has changed since the last announcement, below I summarize the changes......

First of all the price of the ticket for the reunion has been reduced from £25 to £20. The organizing committee have been able to reduce the price as there is not now an afternoon tea, and the morning coffee is being part-subsidized by the Department of Biochemistry.

The Strawberry Tea is a separate event which will cost £8 if you choose to go.

So after our final speaker, you could go to the Strawberry Tea, come
to the QECA AGM
, go on a College tour, or slope off to the Student's Union Bar which will be open and have a TV showing football - apparently there is some competition happening on the continent. A flyer is available for download with the events and timings for the whole day, or click her to see the schedule.

Alternatively you and your friends can retire to a local cafe/pub/wine bar or wherever.

Latest Update from Ann : April 2006

Hello again

I want to bring you up-to-date on the June 10th Reunion being held on the Strand Campus.  We are finalising arrangements so I can confirm that the cost of tickets will be £20.  This will include refreshments (tea/coffee/biscuits) at the beginning of the reunion plus a two course buffet lunch.  Please contact the KCL Alumni Office for further details and tickets (you can also phone them on 020 7848 3053). There will be a Strawberry tea (£8) from 15.30 till 17.30 on the terrace next to Somerset House – again, details from the Alumni Office.

Gathering for the QEC Kensington Walk 2005I can also confirm that we will be having a Kensington Walk on the afternoon of Sunday June 11th.  The exact route is yet to be finalized, but Jo Crocker who devised last year’s walk, is working on it.  We hope to follow the same overall plan as last year i.e. meet in  the Windsor castle pub on Campden Hill Road between 12noon and 2pm for lunch and/or drinks and a chat before starting the walk at 2pm to end up in a local park coffee shop…..or another hostelry!

You may also wish to make a really big occasion of the weekend and plan to attend the Reunion Ball (Dinner/Dance) on the Saturday evening (June 10th).  This will be held in the Waldorf Hotel’s stunning venue of the Palm Court, which has been restored to its Edwardian splendour.  Tickets will cost £75 and include a champagne reception, a four course meal and includes half a bottle of wine each.  I have arranged with Alison Taylor (KCLA Social Secretary) that QEC alumni can request places on a ‘QEC table’ –  when you book your tickets please say you want to be seated on a QEC table so you can all chat about the old days…..or at the very least, know who you are gossiping about!  If enough of you book places, we may be able to fill several QEC tables and show the KCL and Chelsea alumni how to have a good time!

For those of you who don’t fancy the dinner/dance, perhaps you’d like to meet for drinks in the Waldorf anyway – it’s on the Aldwych, very central and close to the Strand Campus where we’ll be for the reunion.

So, just a few things there for you to ponder on, and plan to do.  I do so hope I will be meeting as many of you as possible on June 10th and 11th.  It promises to be a very special weekend.

Bye for now

Ann

Guest Speakers

Professor Keith Gull FRS, QEC 1966-72“For the huge reunion planned for June 2006 where we have 2 guest speakers and students/staff from QEC, Chelsea and KCL from the degree programmes closing next year (Biology, Microbiology, Environmental Sciences, etc), I am delighted to say that Professor Keith Gull FRS CBE has agreed to give the first talk at noon and also to stay all day.

He was a student in Microbiology from 1966-72 (undergrad and postgrad), went on the be a lecturer at Kent and then to Manchester where he was Professor.  He is now Professor at Oxford in the William Dunn School of Pathology, so he's not got too far to travel to the Strand!

I knew Keith all those years ago and have only seen him intermittently since then.  He has risen to dizzy heights and I think he will be a real attraction for former students to come back to listen to and to meet again.  I also think he will be a real encouragement to the final batch of students who really feel their degrees are 'worthless' because of their closure.

The second speaker will be Dr. Geoff Watts. Geoff studied Zoology at KCL and is currently presenter of Leading Edge on BBC Radio 4.”
